Readers' contributions

Here is a space for readers to offer things they have upped. You know the house policy - if it's got soul, then it is welcome here. The more the merrier. One small rule: only post your own links. If you want to let us know about something interesting posted on another blog, that's fine, but say where it is from. What you waiting for? Get posting!

Well this seems to be going down very well. Keep the posts coming and if anyone is unsure just send us the link and we'll post it for you.

If anyone is wanting anything let us know and we'll see what we can do for you - we could also do a weekly wants post - let us know what you think.

Remember we will be going private soon so keep those emails coming in

The Soul Of Detroit

I've always been very fond of this CD as it is the first one I ever got. If I remember rightly it is not what I originally ordered, but this turned up and yes it is a great CD. I think this was the first release from Soul Supply, who released The Northern Soul Story Lps in the 80's, and then went on to form Goldmine. A fine collection of Detroit Soul,

Part 1
Part 2

Lou Beatty's Detroit Soul

Some rare Detroit Soul now from Lou Beatty's LaBeat label. Some of the rarest and most indemand Northern Soul singles are on LaBeat, such as Lestor Tipton and Al Williams along with classics from The Masqueraders and the fantastic Baby Don't You Weep by Edward Hamilton & the Arabians (although I don't think this actually came out on LaBeat). Now the quality of all these tracks is not perfect but it is as fine a set of Detroit Soul you will find.

Jackie Wilson Uptown and Upnorth

I think it's about time we had a bit of Jackie Wilson so keeping in the Northern vein how about Uptown and Upnorth a collection of Jackie's tracks that have been popular on the UK Northern Soul scene over the years. Hard to pick a fave track here but I do like Haunted House and Sweetest Feeling is an all time fave of mine. Sheer class

Motown Sings Motown Treasures

1st January 2008, lets start the year how we mean to go on!

This set originally came out in the UK as a single CD featuring a set of unreleased alternate versions. Then it came out in the US as a double CD using all the tracks from the UK release. As a set of Motown covers goes it's brilliant and features a number of original versions such as What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted by The Isley Brothers and the original version of I Heard It Through The Grapevine by the Miracles (this is a different version to the one on Special Occasion).

This ones for my mate Mike, enjoy this one bud,

This Is Northern Soul - Okeh records - part 1

Well what can I say about Okeh records that has not already been said, not a lot really. Based in Chicago, that is where most of the recordings were made, but not all. Okeh was formed in the thirties as a black music subsidary of Columbia. By the sixties they were churning out uptempo sounds that were perfect for the UK Northern Soul scene. In the mid seventies this was the label to collect. Lots of scans with this post. Part 1

Patti Austin - The Complete Coral recordings 1965-1967

Patti Austin was only 15 when she first recorded for Coral back in 1965. Patti has always been popular on the Northern Soul scene with classics such as Take Away The Pain Stain - Take Your Time and my favourite track by her You're Too Much A Part Of Me, (check out Music To My Heart on the ABC post). This CD came out in France in 1999 and is now very sought after. Interestingly an EP was issued in France in 1966. When I can get to a scanner I'll post the back cover.

The Northern Soul of ABC

I've not posted any Northern Soul for a while so how about these two beauties featurng tracks from ABC records. Lots of classics on here starting with Earl Jackson and Soul Self Satisfaction, what a track. Every time I hear "Oooh Oooh Pap Papa Pada, Oooh Oooh Pap Papa Pada, I Need Some Soul Self Satisfaction Nana Baby, Oh Yeah " it sends a shiver down my spine, even when I'm singing it! This is the epitome of Northern Soul, it has everything going for it.

Backed up with The Sheppards, The Trends, The Marvellows, Patti Austin etc that is why this Cd is one of my favourites and gets a weekly play at least. A few ABC classics are missing from these sets but I might just do a volume 3.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, turn the volume up, close your eyes and imagine it's 1976 again. It's stomping time.................

The Ike and Tina Turner Show -Live

This is a selection of live tracks from Ike and Tina's shows recorded during 1964-65 while they were signed to Loma/Warner Bros. I don't think these are actual live concerts, although most of the tracks are actually live recordings. Most of these were used on the Warner Bros Live shows Lp's in the sixties but some of the tracks from those albums are missing from this set. Somebody Needs You has clapping etc dubbed on the original single.

Pretty good though, well what do you expect from a Geezer like Ike!

Ike Turner - A Genius

Ike Turner one of the pioneers of modern music sadly passed away today. Ike has always had a bad reputation as a wife-beater, womaniser etc but he was a musical genius who I believe has not always been given a fair press. Putting all that aside, as a collector of Ike and Tina Turner for over 30 years here's a small selection of their very large collection of recordings. I have chosen some of my favourites, the Sue recordings and the Blue Thumb recordings from 1960-65 and 1969 respectively. If these prove popular I'll post some of their Warner Bros live sets,

Motown Live - a couple of requests

Yeah, yeah, I know the Supremes' set is a bit cheesy, but the Temps is the real deal. In any case, they were readers' requests, so what's a soul head gonna do? Get all hard core and refuse to post anything but O.V Wright B-sides and Linda Jones unreleased demos?

What's that? Complaining I ain't posted a cover for the Supremes? What do you expect - I don't want to create the wrong impression here. Give a guy a break .....

More JT on Malaco

Just can't do right
Good love
Real Love
Cheaper to keep her

JT - In Control

1. You Knocked My Heart Out of Line
2. It Don't Hurt Me Like It Used To
3. In Control
4. Got to Leave This Woman
5. Let's Get Closer
6. I Found a Love
7. Now That You Cheated
8. Love's Easy to Fall Into
9. Everything's Out in the Open
10. That's the Way It Is

Part 1
Part 2

JT - Lover boy

Third outing for Malaco and a bit too smooth for my tastes in some cases. Sorry for the odd click on this vinyl rip. You can't win is not included here - the track was unplayable. Any help would be welcomed - same song, but better version from the Stax years is available on the Lifetime set (cd1).

1. Don't Make Me Late
2. Lover Boy
3. Lately
4. You Can't Win With a Losing Hand (missing)
5. Something Is Going Wrong
6. If I Lose Your Love
7. Girl of My Dreams
8. Nothing Like a Lady
9. Happy Time
10. Universal Lady

JT - Wall to wall

JT's second outing on Malaco. Both label and artist were aiming directly at the core fan base, to good effect.

1. Wall to Wall
2. Can I Love You
3. When She Stops Askin'
4. Just Because
5. I'm Changing
6. No Refund
7. Nothing as Beautiful as You
8. 383-Emergency
9. There's Nothing I Wouldn't Do

JT - Back to soul

Malaco bills itself as the last soul label, and you can see what they mean here. This is a question of back to basics for Johnnie Taylor, doing he always did best. Mellower than the Stax years, but moving away from the desperate search for a crossover disco hit that marred his latter years at Columbia. Track 6 is in a separate file.

1. This Is Your Night
2. L.O.V.E.
3. Drown in My Own Tears
4. Love to Call Mine
5. Still Called the Blues
6. She's Cheating on Me
7. After Hours Joint
8. Lady, My Whole World Is You
9. Good With My Hips
10. That's America

JT - Just ain't good enough

A brief stop over at Beverley Glenn, and a step in the right direction if you ask me. Even the clothes are better :-)

1. What About My Love
2. Don’t Wait
3. I’m So Proud
4. Just Ain’t Good Enough
5. I Need A Freak
6. Reagonomics

JT - Little Bluebird

Stax issued this set as late as 1990, included here primarily because of the live tracks.

1. Little Bluebird
2. Toe hold
3. I've got to love somebody's baby
4. Just the one (I've been looking for)
5. Outside love
6. You can't get away from it
7. I had a dream
8. Somebody's sleeping in my bed
9. I ain't particular
10. Steal away (Live)
11. Stop dogging me (Live)
12. Jody's got your girl and gone (Live)

JT - Last of the Columbia sessions

This set from 1980 finishes off the Columbia years. Beverley Glenn and Malaco to follow.

1. The Heart Break Kid - 3:50
2. I'd Rather Hurt Myself (Than To Hurt You) - 4:01
3. I Got This Thing For Your Love - 4:10
4. Singing Off With Love - 3:26
5. Baby Lay Down - 4:58
6. Sneakin' Sneakin' - 4:03
7. I Wanna Get Into You - 4:59
8. Sylvia - 4:23
9. Baby don't hesitate - 5:03

More Johnnie Taylor on Columbia

The next three installments of the JT flood. Definitely not my favourite period - too much disco, not enough soul. Better days were coming though, with the imminent switch to Malaco, but more of that later.

Homer Banks (Born 2-August-1941 In Memphis, Tennessee, Died 3-April-2003 At Saint Francis Hospital In Memphis, Tennessee - Cause: Cancer)

If the name Homer Banks doesn't immediately strike a chord, check out the song-writing credits on your records: he'll be in there somewhere. Amongst his compositions were "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want To Be Right", "Ain't That Loving You" and "I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down". His work has been covered by everyone from Bryan Ferry to the Rolling Stones, via Nana Mouskouri and Tom Jones.

Best known, then, as a writer for the Stax stable from 1966-75, Banks was also a recording artist in his own right, and it is this much less celebrated facet of his career that's addressed on this 21-track compilation. Originally recorded for the Minit label in the mid-'60s, the songs fall broadly into two camps: the riff-heavy dance tracks and the big Southern soul ballads. He proves himself a master of both styles.

His first release was "A Lot of Love", with a rhythm that the Spencer Davis Group reworked for "Gimme Some Loving". "Sixty Minutes of Your Love" and "Hooked By Love" follow a similar pattern - honking tenor sax, brass stabs, tight backbeats and chanting choruses whip up an impressive storm, out of which emerge Bank's slightly gruff but precisely enunciated vocals. Irresistibly danceable, this is music for which the Blues Brothers would have sold their souls.

Perhaps even better are the slow tracks like "Foolish Hearts Break Fast", where "Banks" demonstrates an unexpected subtlety to his voice, almost cracking at times as he soars into a very attractive falsetto register.

None of these were hits, though listening to, say, the catchy desperation of "Sometimes It Makes Me Want To Cry", you'll find that hard to credit. And amongst the tales of love, the stand-out track is the social commentary "A Poor Man's Son", opening with the lines 'The streets was my playground, tears was my toys.'

It comes as no surprise that he writes great songs, but it's the singing that gets you again and again on these recordings. Its a genuine treat to re-discover this great lost star of Stax Records.

Composer and producer Homer Banks was one of the unsung heroes behind the rise of Stax Records; though a fine soul singer in his own right, he never recorded for the label, instead teaming with Bettye Crutcher and Raymond Jackson as We Three, the songwriting troika responsible for a number of the company's classic singles. Born August 2, 1941, in Memphis, Banks co-founded the gospel group the Soul Consolidators before joining the office staff of the local Satellite Studios, later re-christened Stax. He dwelled in relative anonymity during his early years with the company, although co-workers Isaac Hayes and David Porter proved instrumental in landing him a session with the Genie label, resulting in the 1965 release of Banks' debut single "Sweetie Pie." The much-imitated and oft-covered "A Lot of Love" followed on the newly-revived Minit imprint in 1966, and over the next two years Banks issued four more singles for the label — "60 Minutes of Your Love," "Lady of Stone," "Round the Clock Lover Man" and "(Who You Gonna Run To) Me Or Your Mama.

Betty Everett - The Shoop Shoop Song

This is a collection of Betty's Vee-Jay recordings made between 1963 and 1966, it is not the complete set though and does not include the tracks she made with Jerry Butler, (that album will be coming later). For me Betty has that clean, clear voice that sets her in the top ten of female vocalists and along with the usual great Chicago production listening to her records is sheer bliss.

Now here's a question for the Northern Soul fans, where did you first hear "It's Getting Mighty Crowded"?, now that was a floor filler back at my local youth club in 1971, and it is still one of my all time favourites, heaven.

Clarence Carter

Well the trial with Divshare worked for some but not for others, but it did work fine for sending links to my friends who were having problems with Rapidshare! Oh well lets try Mediafire, (I've treid a few of the other suggestions and cannot get them to work). Please let me know of, good or bad, what you think of Mediafire

Our second Clarence Carter album is The Dynamic Clarence Carter from 1969. I think that Clarence is a very underatted artist, he has a very distinctive style, just listen to "You've Been A Long Time Coming", great stuff

As with the previous Sixty Minutes With contains some fine Soulful vocals with Clarence's distinctive vocals

We finally come to Clarence's most well known track "Patches", great lyrics, great vocals, great backing track, great stuff!!!!!!!!

Marvin Gaye - What's Going On

What has become one of the greatest albums of all time almost nearly failed to get off the ground. To quote Bill Dahl from Motown The Golden Years, "Crying out at the injustice of an indefensible war in Vietnam, Gaye crafted a profoundly personal statement that flew in the face of the assembly-line creativity at the heart of the Motown empire". Well it's not exactly Boy meets Girl, Boy falls out with Girl stuff is it? Legend has it that Berry Gordy hated it, disc-jockeys weren't thrilled with it but the man behind the promotion Weldon McDougal kept pushing it, the public loved it (who wouldn't?) and the rest is history. I first got this album in the early seveties but we are going to spoil you. This is the deluxe (expensive!) version that came out in 2001.

The Tammi Terrell Story

A tribute to the Irresistible beautiful Tammi Terrell

I hope this is a fitting tribute to Tammi who was without a doubt one of Motown's finest vocalists. Her solo songs are just fantastic and when paired with Marvin Gaye well what can be said? they are just sheer perfection. I make so excuses here for posting so many photos of Tammi, she had beautiful looks to match her beautiful voice,

Tammi Terrell joined forces with the immortal Marvin Gaye to create some of the greatest

love songs ever to emerge from the Motown hit factory; sadly, their series of classic duets -- "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing," and "You're All I Need to Get By" among them -- came to an abrupt and tragic halt with her premature death. Tammi was born Thomasina Montgomery in Philadelphia on April 29, 1945; after winning a number of local talent contests, by the age of 13 she was regularly opening club dates for acts including Gary U.S. Bonds and Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles. In 1961, she was discovered by producer Luther Dixon and signed to Scepter. Credited as Tammy Montgomery, she made her debut with the single "If You See Bill," followed early the next year by "The Voice of Experience." After James Brown caught Tammi’s live act, she was signed to his Try Me label, issuing "I Cried" in 1963 and also touring with his live revue. "If I Would Marry You" appeared on Checker a year later, during which time she also studied pre-med at the University of Pennsylvania.

While performing with Jerry Butler in Detroit in 1965, Tammi was spotted by Motown chief Berry Gordy, Jr., making her label debut with "I Can't Believe You Love Me."

When subsequent outings "Come On and See Me," "This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You)," and "Hold Me Oh My Darling" earned little notice, she was paired with Gaye, who previously recorded duets with Mary Wells and Kim Weston. His chemistry with Tammi was immediate and in 1967, they entered the pop Top 20 with the magnificent "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," the first in a series of lush, sensual hits authored by the husband-and-wife team of Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson.

"Your Precious Love" cracked the Top Five a few months later and in 1968, the twosome topped the R&B charts with both "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" and "You're All I Need to Get By." The success of these later hits was nevertheless tempered by Tammi’s off-stage travails -- after an extended period of severe migraine headaches, in 1967 she collapsed in Gaye's arms while in concert at Virginia's Hampton-Sydney College, and was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Although the tumor forced Tammi to retire from performing live, she continued to record with Gaye even as her health deteriorated; however, as time went on, Valerie Simpson herself assumed uncredited vocal duties on a number of hits, including 1969's "Good Lovin' Ain't Easy to Come By" and "What You Gave Me." (For several other tracks, Gaye's vocals were added to pre-existing Tammi solo recordings.)

Mention must be made here of Valarie Simpson who is actually singing on most of the tracks on the Easy album.

In all, Tammi endured eight operations, ultimately resulting in loss of memory and partial paralysis; she finally died in Philadelphia on March 16, 1970. Gaye was so devastated by her decline and eventual passing that he retired from the road for three years; her loss also contributed greatly to the spiritual turmoil which informed his 1971 masterpiece What's Going On. At the time of her death, Tammi Terrell was just 24 years old.

Rated Xtraordinaire

Playing these late 70s albums again raises a few questions. The thing that stuck in my mind was the overt disco-orientation of some of the singles, and that left a bad taste in my mouth, especially when compared with the best of his Stax period. But that is only one part of the story, and by no means the main part. Taylor's voice is one of soul's finest, and he could make more than a go of even the most mediocre material. Besides, there is plenty of straight soul in these Columbia albums. I remember buying this while still at school, having read a rave review in Blues & Soul by, I presume, John E. Abbey. I never quite bought Abbey's superlatives, but this is by no means bland disco. Taylor had his fair share of trials and tribulations, and I am not churlish enough to begrudge him a few disco dollars. Selling out? No, no real question of that. I've often thought of his careers in terms of Stax, skipping Columbia, and then listening again when he found his way to Malaco, but I confess now that there was much more meat on these disco bones than I was giving them credit for.

Eargasm - Start of the Columbia years

1976, and the beginning of a new era for JT. He'd signed with Columbia, and was about to earn some serious recognition from the disco fraternity, and plenty of dollars into the bargain.

Stop half loving these women

Nice set from 1975 on Paula records. Blues and soul in equal, southern proportions.

Reflections

This set is from 1975, on RCA, his only album for the label before moving on to more commercial success at Columbia in the disco era. Not classic JT, perhaps, but it stands the test of times well enough in its own way, and is well worth a listen.
